Gum and Oral Health

Maintaining good oral health is essential for overall well-being, and one aspect often overlooked is the impact of gum health. Gum health plays a significant role in oral hygiene, and neglecting it can lead to various issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, and even systemic health problems.

What is Gum treatment?

Gum treatment, also known as periodontal treatment, involves various procedures aimed at addressing gum disease and improving overall gum health. These treatments are essential for preventing further damage to the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

Why is Gum treatment performed?

It is performed for several important reasons related to maintaining optimal oral health and overall well-being:

  • Management of Gum Disease.
  • Prevention of Tooth Loss.
  • Impacted teeth.
  • Reduction of Gum Inflammation.
  • Elimination of Plaque and Tartar.
  • Prevention of Complications.
  • Maintenance of Oral Function.
  • Improvement of Oral Aesthetics.

What are the types of Gum and Oral health treatment?

There are several types of gum and oral health treatments available, depending on the specific condition being addressed. Here are some common ones:

Root Canal Treatment

  • Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is performed to treat infections or inflammation within the pulp of the tooth.

  • It involves removing infected or damaged pulp tissue from the inside of the tooth, disinfecting the root canals, and filling them with a biocompatible material to seal the tooth.

  • Root canal treatment is typically recommended for teeth with deep cavities, extensive decay, trauma, or infection to save the tooth and alleviate pain.

Advanced Gum Treatment (Gingivitis/Gingival Infection)

Advanced gum treatment is performed to address various stages of gum disease, including gingivitis (early stage) and periodontitis (advanced stage).
Advanced gum treatment for gingivitis or gingival infection typically involves more intensive procedures beyond regular dental cleaning.

Bad Breath & Halitosis Treatment

  • Bad breath, or halitosis, can result from various factors, including poor oral hygiene, gum disease, dry mouth, and certain medical conditions. Treatment options may include:

    • Improved oral hygiene

    • Professional dental cleanings

    • Treatment of underlying conditions

    • Lifestyle changes

Frenectomy

Frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is used to treat a lip or tongue tie. It can be used to increase the range of motion of your tongue or to close a gap between two teeth. A frenum that is too short or too tight can cause oral health issues and interfere with speech. In babies, it can cause issues with feeding and swallowing. Depending on the site of the procedure frenectomies can be classified as labial gums or lingual (tongue) frenectomy.

Genioplasty

Genioplasty, commonly referred to as chin surgery, is a kind of cosmetic surgery used to alter the chin's appearance. It gives us the freedom to align the chin position forward or backward according to facial esthetics.
It is carried out by a plastic surgeon under general anesthesia. If you are concerned with the position, shape, or contour of your chin, genioplasty may be a good treatment option for you.

Flap Surgery

  • Flap surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to treat advanced gum disease (periodontitis).

  • During flap surgery, the gums are gently lifted back, and the underlying infected tissue is removed.

  • The tooth roots may be smoothed to prevent bacterial reattachment, and the gums are repositioned and sutured into place.

  • Flap surgery reduces pocket depths around the teeth, making it easier to maintain oral hygiene and preventing further progression of gum disease.
